Episode 30 Keepin it Weird
This episode comes from the Twitch stream on July 27, 2023. Things get off to a nice brooding start, with a darker driving feel. This first piece to me sounds a bit like driving at night, alone with your thoughts. The next one gets more experimental with some effected sounds that make for a bit of a mystical texture to go off of, and then things get a bit densely layered. The third piece continues into the realms of sonic exploration, with a nice rhythmic pulsing that lays the ground work for some more spacey effects. It’s fun to experiment with different textures like this to just stretch the possibilities more. At first the next one doesn’t venture quite so far into the weird (at least in terms of effects) with more straight forward cello sounding loops. After building up some layers, I like the sort of lonely journey sound when the bowed layers drop away. Things come together around the bass line, which drives things forward, but then almost turns the song into a cello dub/reggae song, thanks to the chopping offbeat bowed stabs, and then a pretty cool melodic theme over top. The fifth song channels some LCD sound system when I find the repetitive synth sounding rhythmic note and build off of that motif. This one is my favorite piece from the stream, because I think it combines a modern take with a more classical sound and bridges the gap in a way that works.
